Kieran McEvoy, Louise Mallinder and Anna Bryson have just returned from Seattle where they presented interim findings from recent field research on lawyers, conflict and transition.
The dedicated paper session on Lawyers in Conflict & Transition was chaired by Ron Slye, Professor of public international law, international criminal law, transitional justice, and international human rights law. Most recently, from August 2009 to August 2013 Ron was chosen by Kofi Annan to be one of three international Commissioners for the Kenyan Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission.
Anna Bryson provided an overview of the Lawyers, Conflict and Transition project before presenting a paper on ‘The Gendered Professional: Female Lawyers in Conflict and Transition’. Louise Mallinder addressed political transitions and cause lawyers within the state, and Kieran McEvoy analysed the relationship between lawyers, clients and ’causes’ with specific reference to South Africa.
